Beggars Belief !

I always was a firm believer that councils were made up from 'crackpot's . This has confirmed that belief.

How can someone without anything be fined £100 ?

Will they march them to the nearest cashpoint or send a letter to the occupant of M & S Doorstep , High Street ?

Plans to issue £100 fines for begging are to go ahead, Poole council has confirmed.

The introduction of fines in the Dorset town was put on hold last month following criticism from the Bishop of Sherborne and residents.

But the Borough of Poole says the fines will now come into force from 16 April.

The Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) will be in place in the town centre, Holes Bay, Alexandra Park and the Ashley Road area.

Under the rules, fines could also be given to those found sleeping in car parks and doorways.

'Vulnerable people'

The Reverend Pat Southgate, of homelessness charity Routes to Roots, said: "Once again we are appalled.

"This measure does nothing to help these most vulnerable people find a solution to help meet their needs, it merely puts them at risk of being criminalised for being poor."

The Bishop of Sherborne, the Right Reverend Karen Gorham, was among those who criticised the fines which she said would make the homeless "even more vulnerable".

More than 3,350 people have signed an online petition against the measure.

The authority said a public consultation showed 50% of 279 respondents agreed with PSPO restrictions on begging in the town centre.

It said the fines aimed to "tackle behaviours that are causing concern and distress to people in the town centre, such as aggressive begging, street drinking".

The restrictions will be reviewed by the authority in six months

They'll probably try to take a small amount of money off their benefits each week; if this fails, then it'll be a day or 2 in Police Stations as magistrates won't jail anyone for such a small amount.

Re: Beggars Belief !

We had the same sort of thing happen here

We have a lovely gentleman who's not been quite right since he came back from serving somewhere or another ( not 100% sure of the whole back story)who walks the streets all day, flitting from town to town and begs.

He is always very polite and just asks for 20p. Never gets abusive or anything and if its a nice day and you stop and chat to him he really is a genuinely nice fella

Last year someone complained to the police about him and low and behold he up in court and given 7 days

What was the point of that?

Total waste of tax payers money

If they have no permanent address, they won't get benefits. That's why it seems so crazy.

Re: Beggars Belief !

I do sometimes give money to those who play music I like .
The other week there was a young chap with a guitar playing the most lovely old Irish songs ( in the bitter cold too)
There was also a Peruvian man playing the pipes in a town plaza was wonderful well worth a pound or two in the hat.

Re: Beggars Belief !

It all beggars belief sometimes.
There was a pedo dwarf guy who avoided a custodial sentence as the judge thought he would have a hard time or get picked on more than usual.

I think some judges should be jailed for the pathetic sentences they give. They are a bloody joke.
