The American flag

Just watched dave gorman on TV.
He was saying about how the Americans are bought up from school days to respect the american flag. Nothing wrong in that

When the flag gets so worn out or tattered and get disrespectful is the problem of disposing of it. Putting it in a trash can is not the way nor cutting it up

This bit made me smile
The recommended way of disposing of it is to BURN IT.

I have no respect for any flag, it is only a piece of cloth.

Re: The American flag

Morning all.

Yes OGF, it certainly is what it stands for! In the American civil war between North and South America, their regimental flag was of great importance and pride and especially a morale booster to every man fighting. They would and did give their lives to protect their regimental flag from being captured by the enemy. Flag bearers were always the main target. If the flag bearer was shot, that meant the flag of their regiment/country was down, there was always someone ready to pick it up and raise it high, thus becoming the next main target.

Very old tradition going back to at least to the Romans and probably earlier.

And sadly it now stands for a country with an idiot of a president who is bringing his country into disrepute.

Re: The American flag

There's no irony here, RS.

A flag retirement ceremony, typically conducted by the Boy Scouts of America or a veterans group, is a a somber, dignified, ceremony that often includes a presentation of the color guard, a reading of the history of the flag, and singing the national anthem. Flags are collected through the year, folded, stored, and burned all at once.

If done by the scouts, it includes the boys in uniform, properly saluting the flag while the flags are folded, placed into the receptacle and burned. The ashes are then respectfully buried.

The president will change from time to time, but the flag will remain Tara. It will never be down to one man or one political persuasion, it's bigger than that, it represents many years of struggle by that countries people. In most countries it represents freedom....
