Border control has many purposes including a check on goods entering the country.

As has been pointed out to you, illegal immigrants arrive in many ways (see the dinghies in the channel) including those which come through Border Control (on holiday; to study etc.) perfectly legally but simply never leave.

Border control is a place, not a body of people.
UK Visas & Immigration are the body responsible for ..... guess what?

How did you prove you were Irish or UK?

No id needed just a ticket.
I lived near Stranraer for plenty long enough.

Instead of squirming you might like to explain how you bought a ticket to travel between NI and mainland UK; and what information is on the ticket?
As a Brit it's easy.
From elsewhere, not so much.

Should I get my popcorn ready?

You need to be a British or Irish citizen and have a ticket delivered to an address in the UK, NI or Ireland if you order before you travel.
Otherwise a passport must be seen together with eligibility to travel before you can even buy a ticket.
Are you getting it yet?

Ahem...clears throat...
Yes, I have done the journey, dozens and dozens of times. Pre Covid I would fly from Belfast to London every few months. I have also flown to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester. We also come over in the car by ferry most years. You can not fly from N.Ireland to GB without photographic ID. Most airlines will insist on a passport, not sure if it is still the case but a few years ago other photo ID was acceptable by some airports and airlines.
Stena line do not require you to have a passport when travelling by ferry from Belfast to Cairnryan (or if they do they have changed the regs since last year) but DFDS did require passports for travel when they did the Belfast to Liverpool route a few years ago, which Stena then took over.

By the way, quite a few times in the last couple of years when I have flown to London from Belfast there have been one or 2 illegals being escorted by guys from a security company. They get seated first and taken off last, and then taken to a holding centre. I got talking to one of the security guys and when I said this was the first time I had seen this happen he said "you would be surprised how many we get".

Re: 3yr fishing deal???

Photo evidence is required to travel between UK and ROI. The last time I travelled to ROI, two years ago, my passport had expired and at the check in a supervisor was called. After a brief discussion I was allowed to travel. I presume this was because, although a passport isn't strictly necessary, my expired passport did provide photographic evidence.

A lot different now than back in the day when all you needed was a vaild ticket.

It is different and again you're looking from the UK perspective.
If you're not British or Irish you need a passport AND evidence that you are elligible to travel.

Zaphod, The ticket is actually just downloaded to your smartphone. I know someone living in UAE who bought one. ANYONE can buy one.

Yeah right.
No, anyone can not buy one as I have told you.
Your "someone" is a Brit with a UK passport no doubt, though I don't doubt you will change the story once you realize and read this.
Stretch the truth all you want but the reality remains exactly as I have stated.

Now please stop dragging this thread off-topic.
It is about the UK fishing saga and Brexit.
