eurostar's desperate quest for €585million in public funds to plug a financial black hole cannot be justified if it goes ahead with plans to plough almost exactly the same amount into its spanish subsidiary, a french trade organisation has said.

Whitehall sources said the Department for Transport was “engaging actively” with Eurostar but stressed "no-deal" had been agreed.

Whatever that means. Convoluted tricks to cover up fraud. imo

No guarantee, it may still go under, somebody will take it on and our money with it.

Sounds very suspicious to me.
If they can't give a definite NO it means they are considering it ?
Does the public not have a veto over public money being spent ??
Bloody brilliant ain't it?
We borrow money to bail out French railway who intend to invest
that money in a Spanish railway and we are considering lending
them our borrowed money ??
I wish l'd gone to Eton ?

The problem is that the Conservatives now have no discernible opposition, so they can do what the hell they like and I'm sure that there are many MPs in the Conservatives who not only wish we were still in the EU but, even worse, seem to regard the Frogs as 'our friends'.

Re: Eurostar in cash crisis !!

I see that the French government have finally given in and bailed out Eurostar.
"The French government and Eurostar’s other shareholders will stump up £200m. Britain will not pay a penny and will not provide any loan guarantees, The Telegraph can reveal."
So says The Telegraph today.

Hi

Good, it is not ours and not our responsibility.

Finally, some common sense.

Re: Eurostar in cash crisis !!

It looks like Boris standing firm has caused "our French friends" and the other shareholders to dig deep and come up with the required funding which, cynical me thinks, might just be funnelled into providing a contingency fund for finishing off the Paris-Madrid high speed link.
