You do amuse me Patsy, there are millions of normal working people with shares in companies which can't all be toffs, and if you draw any type of private or company pension then you are the recipient of share income by proxy.

The truth which you seem to ignore is that without people willing to risk their money, for that is what they are doing by buying shares, there would be very little company growth and therefore fewer jobs and therefore even more poverty. Without capitalism there can be no socialism as there would be no-one to fund a welfare system. I must say if you consider anyone who buys shares to be a toff then you are casting a pretty broad net into which many ordinary people will also fall...

Re: Saga Shares

Yes I know - it is a generalisation and I apologise.
I recall when British gas and the phone went private and the shares business - I knew the prices to use them would soar, and they did of course, so although I agree with you on the one hand - I agree with meself on the other !
At least I amuse you - cant be too bad .....

And like Patsy, there are some of us who stick to our principles and for that reason would not invest in stocks and shares.

Re: Saga Shares

I apologise for part of my previous post Patsy, which may have appeared unnecessarily ill mannered so I have now edited it.

My point throughout this thread is that unless people invest in companies then they cannot expand, and the main way they get their investment funds is through sales of shares in their business for which they then repay their investors through dividend payments, and it is no more immoral than being paid interest by your bank on your savings. Banks make most of their income through investing your money in stocks and shares as do pension providers, and that is why I cannot understand attitudes such as yours and UJ's.

Whilst I agree that the wisdom of some of the privatisations of nationalised industries such as power and water were questionable, private companies have had to sell shares since their formation to survive and thrive, which ultimately enriches us all.

Re: Saga Shares

Thanks. As said previously I do see your point and for some companies, as you say its the only way.
I stand by my view though on privatisation of the nationalised industries. The prices soared before the privatisation recently of the P.O - all geared up ready for it. It was the same with the water prices etc....
So, I'm not a fan - that's it really, what else shall we talk about

Re: Saga Shares

Bit like going 'Ahh how cute' when watching lambs gambolling in the field, and then going home to enjoy a lamb chop meal. Anyone on here with occupational pensions - and there'll be a few - are being paid out of dividends from stocks and shares as Plantman has already said . Unless you're prepared to give that part of your income up, then you're in it with the rest of us, principles or no principles. Many of the jobs went to India , China and technology - that's why they're not here any more. We (via the unions) priced our labour out of the market.
Most of us are wealthier today than our parents could ever dream of, so something must have gone the right way, unless a bit of cash in your pocket is against your principles - I can help you out there!
