lasting power of attorney

I'm seriously thinking of arranging this now . I know it can be done privately and paperwork can be filled in by me and my kids . The cost is high with a solicitor and I'm capable of doing it . Im arranging for papers to be sent to me in the next weeks to be read through .

While I'm waiting and deep thinking im asking those of you who have done this to help me think it through , or maybe you've thoughts on this to help and advise me . I now own my own home and a bit of savings .

Thankyou in advance

Hello Susan, relatives who have power of attorney for an elderly relative waited a considerable time for solicitors to arrange this. Just be sure that your instructions are clear.

Re: lasting power of attorney

Before my husband's illness in 2006 we were always going to get around to taking out POA but hadn't. It was quite a while before my husband was deemed able to understand what was required of him to allow me to take it out where he was concerned. I only use it very sparingly though. My children have it in respect of me, so can exercise it if I become unable to managed our affairs.

Re: lasting power of attorney

I just did this for my parents and used the government online service. It is much cheaper than using a solicitor and relatively straight forward. Although it's still not that cheap! Might be worth looking at if not too late.

I would always use a solicitor for all legal transactions, far better to pay more, but ensure you get the best advice, imo.

Re: lasting power of attorney

Just finished doing mine online via the government website, then printed all the pages for signing by witnesses etc. Paid on line £110
It was quite easy to do to be honest.

What happens if someone has no one they can ask to manage things for them?

Re: lasting power of attorney

You could have a lawyer work for you Mups but to be honest I am not sure.
