Is a VPN worth signing up to?

When I got my new laptop I got a month's free trial for Express VPN. I can see the benefits of continuing on with it but I have noticed a few problems such as certain online payments not going through and not being able to view certain sites such as Argos for some reason. When I disconnect the VPN, things go back to normal so is it worth keeping? Is it a case of switching it on and off as required?

Hi

If you want every Enforcement Agency in the World to take an interest in you, get a VPN.

It is like a huge flashing light, I have something to hide, here I am.

Using end to end encryption is another way of attracting attention from loads of agencies.

The Enforcement Agencies are really not bothered with you or your plan for a threesome with the vicar and his wife.

VPNs attract attention and are broken time and time again.

It is not just illegal child porn, it is much more serious things.

You will be under the microscope and will be on the list forever, as will your family.

Never had one, open communications for everything and positively vetted, which means access to all my bank accounts, even now I am retired.

They seriously are not bothered that I advertise on Facebook and pay cash in hand

It just goes into the system and is ignored..

Other things raise alarms, best not to go there.

Quite a few sites now give end to end encryption, even this one. If you see Https in the address bar, your connection is secure. It all stems from the revelations by wikileaks which made the public more aware of privacy concerns.

I use a VPN on the principle that we should be able to go online without our ISPs recording every move. As a business, it also protects my customers when I email them or conduct business with them.

That sounds like a whole lot if reasons not to have one. It runs out tomorrow, so I might just let it go in that case.

Use DuckDuckGo as your browser. They don't track anything, don't keep history, clear cookies, don't autofill, etc. Google just wants all your info

Is a VPN worth signing up to?

I don't know. I'd like to know the answer.

I'm under the impression that a VPN is used to protect yourself against invasion when using a mobile device (laptop) on public wifi. .... ?

Personally I don't care who sees what I google, but I guess one has to be protective of certain things (in Judd's case: client emails), and therefore such communications are best done from your home computer.

But I may be wrong.

I'm not too worried about that tbh (perhaps I should be), I thought the idea of a VPN was to stop hackers and cyber criminals, plus being able to read sites restricted to certain countries (not that I am really interested in that either)

Re: Is a VPN worth signing up to?

Ok, so unless you are a master criminal with gold stored in Switzerland, I really wouldn't be fussed with a VPN then....
