VPNs are not what they are cracked up to be, often making more trouble than they are worth.

I use the incognito mode if I want to browse websites without having to erase cookies after, no history and gives you a blank slate to start your next sign in.

It is like a huge flashing light, I have something to hide, here I am.

Using end to end encryption is another way of attracting attention from loads of agencies.

The Enforcement Agencies are really not bothered with you or your plan for a threesome with the vicar and his wife.

VPNs attract attention and are broken time and time again.

It is not just illegal child porn, it is much more serious things.

You will be under the microscope and will be on the list forever, as will your family.

Never had one, open communications for everything and positively vetted, which means access to all my bank accounts, even now I am retired.

They seriously are not bothered that I advertise on Facebook and pay cash in hand

It just goes into the system and is ignored..

Other things raise alarms, best not to go there.

Lots of things are important. Fighting crime of all kinds..terrorism, international cyber crime etc. But what is much more important than protecting children (all children) from sexual enslavement and lifelong trauma being inflicted on them by low lives who produce child porn?! I can't think of anything.

I certainly wouldn't be without it either though I don't always use it because it slows the system down but there are several circumstances when I do.

Any time I use a public Wifi system such as an airport, Maccas or a caravan park etc I turn it on without fail.

I also use it to overcome geolocation , ie sites like the BBC which won't allow you to watch their on line videos if you re not in the UK.

Using services like Gmail when travelling overseas using VPN stops the provider banning you, I just use an outlet in Australia.

There are also sites which are banned in Australia which you can access from overseas, I am not talking criminal activities here, which VPN allow you to access.

It is worth the $50 a year even though I might use it only a few times a week.

Thanks for the replies. Realistically it is unlikely that I would be using my laptop on a public wifi or on holiday so I think it is maybe not for me.

Two other points one Bruce said.

I am on some American Forums some times im blocked from some American newspapers because of the EU Data protection acts I just click on an Browser of that country and am unblocked.

Other point is my VPN gives me the choice of 6 devices including my Mobil phone and my daughters one.

Yes that's true Galty. I suppose a VPN on my mobile would be useful when I'm out and about.

Re: Is a VPN worth signing up to?

When you are on the Internet, you can be tracked. That means your visits to the bank can possibly - note the word possibly - can be compromised.

VPN, I'm told will stop this. However, the banks as part of their security will check your I.P. address as well as your location amongst other things to check that you are, in fact, you.

If you have VPN it will mask your location, giving out false information and that will throw a wobbly in any financial transaction you do.

So just make your choice and trust to luck.
