So not sure I'd be exactly chuffed if I got called a Hinny, no matter how endearing he tried to make it sound.
It most definitely doesn't have an equine connection up here.

Oh the nostalgia... I haven't had a Singing Hinny since my grandma made them for me when I was a kid.

Hi You old F.......!! [Very familiar]

Hi. My Old Mocker

When strange Tradesmen say 'Hello my Lover' I reply, It's Mrs to you. So they then say' Hello Mrs, My lover!

You can't win

Try being married to a true Cockney!!

I still wince when I listen to him on the phone to a female on the other end of the line!
As an example a call to the building society the other day went like this as he ended the call.

"Yes my Darling, that's great, thanks again for your help sweetheart, you're a little gem, can't thank you enough, take care my love." Bye.

and that is to an unknown woman in these PC times!
She would have been within her rights to ask him to refrain from using such terms, but thankfully didn't.
I've tried many times over the years to discreetly tell him that he shouldn't use familiar terms when speaking to strangers such as he does,
but it's like talking to a brick wall.

Re: Terms of Endearment!

Even in the N.E. these days people still use friendly terms, and the commonest these days is "canny" which means "nice", as in canny lad or canny lass. Lad is defined as a man of any age between early boyhood and maturity and lass is a woman or a young girl (from the Scandinavian: Laskr) Nothing much to take offence at there!

Ditto. I used to know a guy that called any bloke he didn't know personally "John". Even after I introduced myself to him, I was still "John" to him.

I always call Val "darling", it's something I picked up from my father who used to call my mother that. Any very young female family member is "sweetheart" or "sweetie" and the older ones are "love".

I don't mind any really as long they're not said with other motives in mind!
I'm with Art in that Hun drives me inwardly up the wall though!
Even honey is acceptable but "Hun" ? Arggghhh!

It smacks of Winnie the Pooh trying to spell hunny
(Shudders!)
