Thanks Bratti your explanation solves the mystery. It is growing next to a Pieris which has partly covered the roots. The clematis has grown over the Pieris. The picture is wrong way round. My computer skills are on a par with my gardening.

That’s great scot. What a beautiful Clematis. The colours are stunning.

You are very welcome. It probably has nothing to do with ‘your’ computer skills. My last two pictures uploaded sideways also.
