Baby Bottle brush story

Sue always wanted a bottle brush plant and havings seen them in a garden centre ,yes me too wanted one. Mature ones are expensive so we opted for a small one in a small flower pot 3 years ago.
The next we thought it had died with the cold weather etc, but decided to give it a chance' the following year
last year it produced about one flower, yes it had survived yippee.
Well this year what a difference, see photo below

So go, little bottle brush go ,and get bigger

Re: Baby Bottle brush story

here it is in close up ST.

front showing buds, back showing buds just opening. The main flower shows why it is called a bottle brush.

So go baby bottle bush go ,your doing great. Talking to it helped it survive,I (we) are certain of it

As it was in July 2017 when we thought we had lost it and it had died

Re: Baby Bottle brush story

realspeed, Not long ago, l grew two beautiful bottlebrush shrubs in large pots from cuttings.
One winter, l hadn’t enough room in my greenhouse for them and they both died from being outside.
I wish, l had tried harder to fit them in, as they were beautiful tall shrubs.

I've never seen or heard of them either, but I love the look of them. Think I'll try to find one, but I bet I'll have to go way down to Inverness for it. Will get phoning round tomorrow.

Re: Baby Bottle brush story

Bottle Brush are nice flowers but they only flower for part of the year. Personally I think Grevillea are nicer as they flower all year round and provide food for nectar eaters in winter. I have both in my garden.

They can be quite large this is a tree at my local shopping mall

My Grevillea

Just my opinion

BTW like most Australian native plants they thrive on neglect.

Re: Baby Bottle brush story

Just for your information because you might not be aware of this - Most fertilisers kill Australian native plants they HATE phosphorous but you are better off not fertilising at all.

Oh and speaking generally they don't like very wet roots.
