Re: A doleful sycophant dirge

I think the British anthem should remain as it is all the time we have the royal family. Have a different anthem if that ever changes. It is a bit of a dirge but it's too well-known across the World and too well-founded in tradition to change in my opinion.

Other countries don't have a centuries-old royal family to base an anthem on. An anthem using any other head of state wouldn't sound right. 'God save the President' for instance.

Also, Presidents and leaders come and go, whereas the British royal family seems a constant institution and therefore fairly safe to base an anthem on. Anyway, perhaps that's a reason why other countries base their anthems on other aspects of it.

But surely rejoicing our nation is infinitely more important than the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha lot? They weren't even British! Or her Greek husband!

Re: A doleful sycophant dirge

According to the Royal Family site it was first performed in 1745. Although it's thought the tune was plagiarised and goes back to Elizabethan times. That would explain why it seems a dirge. It has the style of music at that time.

Royal families around the world have mixed heritage for obvious political historical reasons. Many of them are related. I don't understand what that has to do with the national anthem. The anthem is to celebrate the British Nation not Germany. It originated in this land not mainland Europe.

But it doesn't celebrate Britain! It's about the now titular head of state.

And it's awful.

It's our National Anthem and that is it.
Of course, if I had a choice of choosing a new one, there is only one that would and should replace it and that is..

The British head of state. I'm sure the Queen doesn't like it either. But there we are.

True, it doesn't celebrate Britain but it does represent it and that's what an anthem should do. I'd say that it's not that bad as a tune/song. Not enough to change it anyway.

She's the titular head of the UK, and the united kingdom is a name that I would like to see changed too.

I'll not see it in m lifetime but the Democratic Republic of England will be a great step forward. I loath Corbyn and Socialism in general but the monarchy and The Establishment really a smack in the face for the British people who are having to pay for the überbenefitsscroungers.

How can a horrible caterwauling with sycophantic lyrics represent Britain and the British People?

Seriously, it's awful!
