Re: When youth of today grows old

@ keezoy, post #19

I have Australian cousins, dozens of them, more than here in the UK. When meeting up with some a couple of years' ago on their visit to the UK it was really noticeable that their lifestyles were so much different from ours here. As people they were, or so it seemed from our conversations, much happier with their lives, it really was that noticeable. Perhaps it's the more laid-back Australian lifestyle that make the difference in how your youngsters are generally compared to our's?

Here is a memory going a bit further: gas masks.

When the war began in September 1939 everyone was issued with a gas mask. It was expected that a gas attack was very likely if not inevitable. I remember that I had to take mine with me to school. It was contained in a box made of a strong cardboard. No gas attack ever occurred. (It is believed by some that this was because Hitler himself had suffered from gas attacks during World War One.)

I am not sure when we stopped carrying them around with ours. My best guess is the summer of 1940. I also wonder what became of them all.

You are on the money with that. I actually felt sorry for the British when I was there. I loved my time in London but there was often an undercurrent of quiet desperation and pessimism. Even with the young ones. I grew up in the sun and surf under a huge sky that never seemed to end. I don't ever remember being really cold except for in the middle of winter at night or down in the snow fields. I never felt angry or depressed or deprived. The key word was always optimism and you can go as far as you want to go. I felt at home in the US as they are very much the same. But!..Despite this Brexit debacle, I also get the feeling that things might be changing a little in the UK?..Tell me they are and I'll be happy for you(se)

Like us, they will realise far too late, EU is a rat trap and they have been conned.

Was yours one of them mickey mouse ones Mr M?
And regarding where they went, they went into a huge
rubber dump, not far from our house and it all got destroyed
in a huge fire started by the sun shining through its glass
eyes!
