Yes you could do this but Ireland have already said that there will be no hatd border and checks will be done away from the geographical border anyway.

It's all a myth.

He doesn't know the difference between the common travel area and trade

He should listen to Simon Coveneys explanation of having checks away from the border and then see exactly what the GFA says about hard borders.

It looks like the Irish are not in a hurry to impose a border anyway should we leave without a withdrawal agreement...

EU 'gradual approach' to border checks in no-deal Brexit - sources
The EU will take a gradual approach to the question of how Ireland will have to comply with checks and controls along the Irish border in the event of a no-deal Brexit, RTÉ News understands.

https://www.rte.ie/news/2019/0906/10...border-checks/
I think the Irish are starting to get cold feet as leave day approaches, they had a four and a half hour meeting the other day in the Irish Cabinet and Coveney tried to play down the fears...
The Irish Times
Ministers taken aback by predicted scale of no-deal Brexit damage
Ministers now believe that a no-deal Brexit will be significantly worse than they previously expected, with predictions of thousands of immediate job losses in tourism and “carnage” in the fishing sector, after discussions at Cabinet on Tuesday night.
