Repair/Patch Up My Freezer

I have a 210 litre Westinghouse Chest freezer in my laundry that has been happily running for nearly 40 years the only thing wrong with it is the lid.

As you can see the lid is going rusty. I have thought of painting it but I am not sure if that will do the job.

Any ideas on how to make it less obvious?

Back in the day when I had my bikes I used to use a cream cleaner call Jiff not quite sure if its still about or under another name.
But it would fetch my chrome wheels up a treat and get rid of any rust.
Maybe worth looking into .

I would probably remove the lid (or mask it well), sand it down and respray using car spray paint.
