The Americans and the Commonwealth are our friends more than the EU. I'd also suggest that some of the individual EU countries are our friends as well.
Certainly, we should be a free and independent nation, but also we need other nations with which to trade.
We also need allies with regard to defence. The presence of American bases on our land discourages offence against us by others.
Be realistic.
