As we're supposed to get our eyes checked every two years anyway (sometimes yearly) maybe the Optician could give you a card to keep in the car saying your ok. If the card is out of date then you don't drive till the test has been done and passed.

That sounds like a workable solution and, after all, the annual eyesight test is free.
