Re: Florence is a monster

I am surprised at the death toll for a Cat 1 cyclone - the Australian press is reporting 11 people killed to date. I can only suppose it is because the area has a high(er) population density. Lots of rain to come according to the press.

Very sad.

Re: Florence is a monster

The causes of death are all over the place, Bruce.

2- Tree falling on house
2- Carbon monoxide poisoning from the generator they were using
2- House fire
1 - Car accident hitting a tree
1 - Electrocution plugging in two extension cords to a generator
1 - Hit in the head with something while packing to evacuate
1 - Heart attack

Aside from the guy killed trying to evacuate, one can't help but wonder how many would be alive if they had left.

So far, no drowning victims.

Such a variety of causes some very first world, but we must also remember that the Philippines was, at the same time, hit by a cat 5 cyclone with 29 deaths. The cyclone is now heading toward Hong Kong and mainland China.

The Philippines reported wind gusts in excess of 300kph when the cyclone hit land. I suspect they will suffer badly being a relatively poor country - the death toll in their case is surprisingly low but I suppose it could well rise.

There is a certain irony in the thread heading.
