Joe, you have a fixation with Maggie and like all socialists you need to take off your blinkers.

This post is about the Royal Mail and it was Tony Blair and Gordon Brown who started the ball rolling on the privatisationing of it.

Margaret Thatcher only had three of the nations utilities privatiased whilst she was in office, the rest came after she left.

The best thing that Maggie did was to curb the power of the unions which led to unions withdrawing the labour and creating havoc. This is what most people see as Maggies fault but the outcome was that the unions stopped their strikes and went back to work without any settlements being made.

Athur Scargill who was supposed to be the 'Beall and Endall' of union leaders has now sued the same union. Talk about loyalty, only whilst he is being paid it seems, like all union officials.

The best thing to do is buy a stock of stamps before the price rise. As long as they say 1st class or 2nd class they will be valid. For me I don't send much by mail so not really bothered.

I have already spoken to some of my friends and we have come to a mutual agreement. We will no longer send cards, Christmas or otherwise. It will be instead, a phone call, much more personal and with my media package costs nothing at all extra. Sorted.

Good idea Mesco m. I will be phoning rather than sending a card. I would think many people will do the same whenever they can. Unfortunately this increase will not add to profits and will probably mean that there will be less money made by the postal service, less postal workers needed, so more unemployment. Perhaps soon all we will get through the door will be unsolicited adverts and flyers delivered by private companies.

Allowances are made for people on low incomes regarding Christmas stamps, they will be allowed to buy up to up to three books of 12 stamps – 36 stamps in total – in one purchase at the 2011 prices.

Wrong yet again Bob. There were the three utilities, Gas water, and electricity, British Telecom (which in fact was the first one), British Rail, British Waterways, British Coal Board and many more Quangos.

An Excellent Idea, I think I may just try that out myself. I already send a lot of E.Cards for Birthdays ect.
I really think Royal Mail just may have shot it's self in the foot this time.

I think it's patronising to those on low income to means test a postage stamp. Utterly disgusting in my opinion.

Joe, history shows that you need to stop being a Socialist and get you facts right.

British Gas was privatised in 1986 ( Margaret Thatcher )

British Steel was privatised in 1988 ( Margaret Thatcher )

Water was privatised in 1989 ( Margaret Thatcher)

Electric was Privatised in 1991. ( John Major )

Railways was Privatised in 1994 ( John Major )

National Coal board was Privatised in 1994 ( John Major )

British waterways is still owned by the government.

British Tellecom was seperated from the post office in 1981 which was a continuation of the Callaghan governments proposals from 1979 and in 1984 it was partially sold (53% of it's shares) as part of the Callagahan agreements and was finally privatised in 1993 if memory serves me correctly.

Quango's are not a sole ownership of the Tory's, Labour introduced far more of them during Blairs rule.

Re: Royal Mail price rise (split from Tory thread)

One of the reasons for the price rise is that not enough people are using the mail service, they now prefer emails.

Like they say folks, use it or lose it. We have only ourselves to blame.
