There will HAVE to be a marked reduction in the standard of living.

The Earth can no longer afford to support us in the way that we have been living. There is no alternative.

No alternative?
What about all of the much vaunted technological advances?
Solar power, nuclear power, wave power and so on.

The milk float was obviously years ahead of it's time. Probably worth a bit now if you could get hold of one.

Just wanted to add that changing a combi boiler from a gas one to an electric one, doesn't necessarily mean that the pipe work becomes redundant. The water in the radiators can still be heated electrically. These boilers are already available and often used in electric only properties such as park homes.

Why use water radiators though? Use of solid core heat storage blocks allows for much better control of release of heat over time. Also instant heat sources of hot water also make more efficient ways of using electricity.

Having the gas supply ended makes a pretty good incentive! Especially when the cost of electricity falls in real terms.

It's the technological advances that you mention that will be called on to replace burning of fossil fuels.

I'm not sure which is most efficient at heating water (my personal guess would be gas but I don't know) just saying though that there was mention of removing radiators and pipework etc but simply swapping the boiler would be a much easier and cheaper option. Most combis only last around ten years anyway.

Then there's the question of log burners and Agas, which are very popular at the moment. In the Winter, the air is thick with fumes around here but no one seems to me mentioning these things which are the 4x4s of the heating world.
