Anyone know what these are?

These things are positioned (mainly in woodland) around the route of HS2. They are like Beachballs on stakes and spin in the breeze, Google has been no use in trying to find out.

Maybe to mark out - without making it too obvious - which bits they are going to destroy to make room for the stupid thing!

Are they markers showing how much is to be destroyed by the line? how many are there?

Just been down to the Woods ST, and took this close up of one of the buggers spinning round, I did not photo the fact that a huge section of the Wood has been flattened, you may be right!

Hi caricature, much of the wood has been devastated, couple of geezers in hi viz overalls surveying the carnage.

Might be to do with the route already surveyed and agreed.
Big projects like this will be needed to get the economy going, not that I agree with it.

They are bird deterrents. I live with farmland to my north and they are abundant this year.

Thanks LongDriver, I suppose they deter nesting so the woods can be cleared with minimal disruption to bird life.

One of my neighbours has a similar thing hanging by their porch , I thought at first they were practising Voodoo until I was told they are called 'Scarem Eyes' bird scarers as Long Driver mentioned...

They look sinister!
We only have faerie folk in our woods around here! You can see them clearly on moonlit nights after several pints of zider!
