Couldn't refuse, JBR, it was the law for a certain portion of your salary to be donated before tax was applied (it reduced your taxable income by the same amount). I was told, the year before I left, I could have selected a "general charity" box on my annual tax form. By leaving this box empty, my "donation" automatically went to the Vatican. Mea culpa for not being able to read Italian well enough and I'd missed this for 14yrs.
