It’s not the figures it’s the disparity between the comparative percentage drops in that the EU has managed to maintain more of its exports to us than we have to them.

As my wife both imports from and exports to the EU the only delays have been on the UK side so the figures would indicate the EU has either stopped buying or has found alternative sources and there is already some suggestion of the latter

The EU always had to make the price a disincentive to others who might have followed suit so this was probably not far off the best we were going to get

But that's what we expect to see during a pandemic when supply chains shut down.

This means that we are in fact £3B better off.!!
This is exactly what should be happening and we should be happy
about this ??
The UK businesses that are losing out by exporting to EU will now
be encouraged to seek markets elsewhere and hopefully importers
of EU goods will now start to import more from the wider world ??
Obviously Rome is not built in a day, but this trend should be
encouraged imo ??
I have just happened across this thread, which sounds interesting.

The first point I want to make is that I would ignore anything the BBC says. They have been shown to decry anything British and, on the other hand, to support everything the EU do.

As some have said, import and export figures are rather unimportant at the moment. For one thing, we are suffering the consequences of the Covid pandemic, so things are bound to be different from normal.

The other thing is that, although we are supposedly an independent nation with an agreed trade deal with the EU, the evidence I have seen is that the EU are doing all they can to punish us for leaving their empire, and that includes creating problems with trade.

Of course, they are happy for us to buy from them, but will put in place as many barriers as they can to prevent movement in the opposite direction. We should factor this in to our suppositions.

As I have said before, Boris has sold us out. We should leave completely, trade with the world under WTO rules plus the independent trade deals we have now created.

In addition, we seem still to be paying the EU for something. I'm not sure what, but it appears to be of no benefit to us.

As they have not yet formally ratified the 'deal' which we have with them, we should now throw that out and while we're at it, take back all that is ours: N. Ireland and our territorial maritime areas.

They (and Boris) have played us for fools long enough!

That would infer that the pandemic had affected UK supply chains significantly more than those in the EU.

Depends .... supply chains have already been affected by stock piling etc.

Why do you think our imports and exports would be unaffected during the pandemic if we were an EU member state ?

According to the ONS things are returning to normal according to the February figures.

As the EU exports are less affected the logical conclusion is that the U.K. stockpiled less than the EU or that there is more disruption to the U.K. supply chain to the EU

As I said previously my wife imports from and exports to the EU are the only disruption is at UK customs which is Brexit related

The Head of the ONS said this morning that it was to early to know if trade would return to pre Brexit levels

That only delays your imports it doesn't affect the volume. What exactly is the delay with customs in your case?

Our imports and export levels fluctuate all the time due to seasonal changes and demand etc. To think as am EU member our trade would be unaffected due to the pandemic doesn't make sense.

Imports and exports have been affected all over the world.

Imports arrive from the EU in 2 to 3 days with all the correct paperwork, product codes And EORI number but are now taking between 2 and 5 weeks to clear U.K. port customs. Some that have entered at the Thames Gateway docks have been damaged and one has now disappeared completely.

Exports to the EU are arriving in pretty much the same timescales as pre pandemic and Brexit

This does not explain why U.K. exports alto the EU have fallen so much more than EU exports to the UK TV

The pandemic has affected imports coming into Harwich by again that doesn’t explain why our exports have fallen so much
