Re: Britain Booms!

Employment figures are always a good indicator of confidence and optimism for markets and businesses.

The FT (the "Daily Remainer") writes that UK Job Postings have returned to pre-pandemic levels. This is great news, because pre-pandemic unemployment figures were the lowest for over 70 years before COVID.

The European Union on the other hand still hasn't recovered from 2008.

My only regret is that we still trade with China (The regime that brought the World to its knees and killed a few million people) Other than that, it is great news. I hope we start producing more goods here at home as soon as we get back to normality.

“We’ve got our freedom, we can make trade agreements with other countries outside Europe [and] we can employ people from all around the world,” said Sir James, who moved Dyson’s manufacturing operations out of the UK almost two*decades*ago and shifted its corporate headquarters to Singapore*in 2019.
And Sir James’ views on the beneficial impact of leaving the EU since 31 December are just as unrepresentative of the feeling in the wider UK manufacturing sector.

There was a recovery in February, but overall levels remain well below the average of previous years. However, manufacturing exports seem to have held up better than other sectors such as live animals and chemicals.
Stephen Phipson of Make UK says there has been a “twin track” for the sector in recent months, with big manufacturing firms managing to keep exporting, albeit with significant extra costs, but smaller firms simply being unable to.
One in twenty exporters*surveyed*by the Federation of Small Businesses last month also said they’d decided to simply stop trying to sell to the bloc, with one in ten considering it.

When the lockdown eases and travel opens up again the*absence of recognition*of many UK professional qualifications in the trade deal will also become a headache for those manufacturing firms who send service technicians to mainland Europe.

The new UK regime for*chemicals regulation*and*product conformity assessments*for goods, which haven’t kicked in yet, will also impose serious fresh red rape and costs on UK firms.

“We’re just at the beginning of this,” warns Mr Phipson.

As for the domestic benefits for UK manufacturing stemming from the “independence” delivered by Brexit, Mr Phipson is sceptical.

“I’m waiting for people to tell me what they are,” he says.

Britain will use its freedom from European Union rules to regulate markets flexibly and make the City of London even more attractive to global investors, the Financial Conduct Authority said on Tuesday.

Something else we couldn't do as an EU member; regulate our own markets.
More growth ahead!

The EU not recognising UK qualifications would be like shooting itself in the other foot. UK universities rank the best in the world, I doubt anyone here could name one German, French, Italian, Dutch University without resorting to Google.

The whole world knows about Oxford and Cambridge

You mean those rowing teams? It broadcasted on any sportsprogram. Or do you refer to those education institutes that recently bought into the EU horizon program? (For fear to be left behind by the rest of the world)
