Spain does not have our social care costs as its still traditional for family to care for the elderly. Our move away from a family culture has meant less funds for health.

JBR,

Good question. sadly, I suspect that all the UK Nationalised Industries have been just as chaotic, over a long period of years.

There are many similarities. Overstaffing, underspending, etc etc etc.

Most of the others have now gone into private hands.

Not all of them have been beneficial to the man in the street, but some, not all, have put in place efficient Management.

I never get why we cannot get good management into the NHS.
It should be achievable?

The way the NHS is managed is a disgrace. We should adopt a system that works, like other Europeans have, and that would probably mean some sort of privatisation. Many don't like the idea, but it is probably the only long-term answer.
At the moment because I am an early retiree. We pay 60 euro each a month into the public health sector. Once we reach our natural retirement age then our contributions from the UK kick in.

I am very happy to pay into good service. We have said if things change we would still be happy to pay in.

Does Spain have same dementia rates as us, we kept our oldies at home but I always said that would have been a deal breaker I doubt I could have managed if their minds had gone.

This might explain things a little Julie, but bear in mind it is from 2005 and things have moved on greatly since then.

There are very many care homes, including many run and owned by the British, that give either full time care, respite care etc for people suffering from dementia. There is also a day centre, not very far from us, where people with dementia can spend their days, this particular day centre is Spanish but it is open to all nationalities. No doubt there are others around too, but this one I know because I pass it many times.
