I agree. The only thing that I won't when out of date are eggs.

That's an easy one to sort out mesco.
Just half fill a jug or similar with cold water and gently drop the egg in (the whole egg, still in its shell).
Fresh egg sink straight to the bottom but as they age, they get gas forming so they will begin to float.
So at first, when they're really fresh, they will lay flat on the bottom, then as they begin to age, they will up-end, and then later still, they will float just off the bottom of the container and so on, gradually rising higher in the water.
If they bob about on the surface, get rid of them quick! Really bad eggs will be very gassy and explode.

It pays to be careful with things prawns and raw poultry as well. These can be very dodgy.

Re: Use by dates

I use to be horrified by how much the super market I worked at would chuck out ... thousands of pounds each day.
When I asked why it couldnt be given to food charities I was told it was to much trouble and they wouldnt give it to staff because they said staff would hide things until out of date so they could have it.... I think they should be made to do some thing useful with it.
I have eaten loads of stuff in my life out of date never done me any harm.

Re: Use by dates

With food banks popping up they could easily help the less well off by donating to them !

Re: Use by dates

Maybe they're not allowed to pass on out of date food Julie, dunno.
I wonder where they'd stand legally if someone was ill and tried to blame it on the food?

Re: Use by dates

If I have something with a Use By date on it (most things) - if I know I'll not eat it all by then, then I freeze it, such as bacon and so on. I often buy end date food then separate it into meal size portions and freeze it.
