Dates

Not the use by ones - the dried variety!

I have bought a bag of dried ones to use in a cake. They're lovely to eat but rather dry and a bit tough. Is it best to soak them for a little while, as you would with apricots, before I add them to the cake?

Re: Dates

I usually soak them in cold black tea for an hour before using. No alcohol here and the tea works fine.

Re: Dates

Joy, you could also try steaming the dates for about 10 minutes....

Awwww sorry to disappoint. I think we should have a board especially for such gossip!!!

Sorry Mags, missed your post before, must have posted at the same time. Steaming sounds good too but I have done the tea method. Looks like they'll be soaking now until tomorrow as I haven't had the time to make the cake yet and I'm not starting now!
