Mince Pies

I have just experimented with a different topping. Someone told me they piped a Viennese whirl topping on theirs so thought I'd give it a try. I haven't a piping bag so forked it on. Just tried one and they are gorgeous!

Here's the Viennese recipe

6oz margarine
2oz caster sugar
6oz self raising flour (I added about 1oz ground almonds too)
few drops vanilla essence

Cream fat and sugar, stir in flour (and ground almonds) and essence.

Has anyone any other topping ideas? I saw Mary Berry making a mince pie tray bake on the TV last week and she had a strudel topping. Looked good.

Here they are, a bit rustic looking but its all in the taste!

Re: Mince Pies

They look gorgeous. I love mince pies but can't be bothered making them as I'm the only one that eats them. The Co-op did some nice ones of puff pastry but then ladled alcohol into them (I don't mind a bit of booze) to such an extent that it's all you can taste. Shame really as it spoilt them (for me).

Re: Mince Pies

Hi Joy they look lovely but I like my mince pies without topping.

I make my own mincemeat with organic fruit soaked in cognac and I think it would be a sin to mask the flavour with anything else.

Eek! Just read that one mince pie is 300 calories...

They do look yummy, though!

Re: Mince Pies

I used to mix mincemeat with apples and make a crumble with the mix, as I am counting calories none for me this year.

Joy I've already made my mince pies and they are in the freezer but the thought of a Viennese whirl topping is something I must try ...... and fortunately I still have some mincemeat left over

Thanks for the tip!
