May bug

I saw this flying around last night (or one that looked very much like it ). Harmless but a bit big and scary when they fly around your head. Cleaning the windows this morning, I moved some plant growth aside and found where it had decided to spend the day.

Re: May bug

I love those, we used to get hundreds flinging themselves against the sun lounge windows in the evenings. Sadly there don't seem to be so many around now. They even came in the door if it was open, I have rescued quite a few from webs, my sun lounge had a few if I don't de-cobweb it.

Re: May bug

They are a bit scary. Had one land on my shoulder once ! Didn't like that. We called them 'billy witches' and I have no idea why, but they have various names attributed to them that possibly originated from different regions.

I wonder if we will have plagues of insects this year ?

Re: May bug

You're braver than me Tiff, don't think I'd fancy one crawling over my hand!

It appears they are harmless though:

Re: May bug

Completely harmless, but they have hooks on their legs which grip so they are difficult to get off, I was careful not to hurt that one & put it outside once I'd removed the cobweb.

Re: May bug

May bugs are my worst nightmare
When I worked in a boarding school the girls used to study in their rooms in the evenings with windows open and lights on and if I heard a scream from one of the 68 bedrooms I knew it was a May bug invading and my job to move it

When my husband was a little boy he was cycling along one evening and one flew down his shirt ....shudders... he disliked them too .

I've never really had a horror of bugs, but I hate wasps, hornets & mosquitoes & those large hairy house spiders, now those really give me the creeps.
