My best mate has prostate cancer.

He confirmed this to me 2 weeks ago. He knew that I am a survivor of this disease, and had already decided that he wanted the prostate removed.
The specialist told him that it would be done by robotic keyhole surgery, and done in the UCH near Euston in London.
On Friday he went to see the specialist that would be doing the op, but told my friend that he could not have it as he would die on the table as he has a heart condition and is over weight.
Talk about being gutted.
So now the option is kemo, but he does not want this as it is still a death sentence.
Why do we believe this? Because I know 3 people that have died and another is now having to undergo more kemo as his cancer has spread.
Today he is considering going to abroad to that clinic that cured the young boy who had a brain tumour, if you remember who's parents took him from the English hospital.
Big fuss was made, but the boy was cured.

I too have a friend with Prostrate Cancer and he has accepted the fact that nothing can be done now as he has refused treatment of any kind for some time.

He has indications (to me) that the cancer has spread but will not admit that that is actually the case.

He made his decision, although I actually feel this was a selfish attitude but it is HIS decision but he will leave a good and faithful woman behind who will suffer without his Pensions.
I would not choose this course. stevmk2

Re: My best mate has prostate cancer.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Emjay, but it may not be as bad as you think. Lots of prostate cancers are relatively benign, and it is thought that a vast number are undiagnosed in men who eventually die of something else before the prostate cancer gets them.
Perhaps he should get another opinion before he makes any decisions?

My brother had prostate cancer when he was only 51. He opted NOT to have surgery but to have chemo and radiotherapy. He is now a healthy 63 and all his follow up has been normal.

Ditto what Patsy said. Sorry I can't really think of anything more original.

Re: My best mate has prostate cancer.

Thanks for all your posts and compassion for my mate.
It is not benign as he had a biopsy. I would add it was done differently to how mine was done nearly 8 years ago.
I thought that chemotherapy only prolonged life for an undefinable period. As I said, there are cases of people I know where it did not work.
For now I cannot remember the place where they have this new equipment that cured the lad with a tuma in the brain. But it will be another year before the first one will be available in the UK.

Emjay, was it the Proton Therapy Centre in Prague where young Ashya King was treated?
