Lion, I had two broken ribs 2 years ago (along with a broken pelvis, wrist, and brain) when I had a fall off a ladder....

They take 4 to 6 weeks to heal and even if they are just bruised, it takes that long...as bruising is as painful as broken ribs.

I guess I was fortunate and only broke one in a normal fall last year. as everyone says, it's quite painful for a week or two but then the discomfort slowly recedes and I guess you assume that it's healed. A quick x-ray is wise in case there is a real separation at the break making further damage possible.
