Sentencing

Hi

I simply cannot understand some of the sentences that are handed down.

This is not a deterrent to anyone, it is an encouragement.

Youssef Abi, 32, appeared before Shrewsbury Crown Court on Monday to be sentenced for common assault, dangerous driving and criminal damage.

He was speeding, drinking alcohol and was unable to keep his car on the correct side of the road while driving a group of teenage girls from Wolverhampton to Rhyl on February 29, 2018.

The court heard the girls feared for their lives and begged Abi to let them out of the car.

When they finally got out of the car on the A53 between Shrewsbury and Shawbury, he drove at them and swerved at the last moment just missing them.

He then punched one of the girls in the face when she wouldn't get back in the car.

Abi was also aggressive towards a passer-by who intervened and smashed her mobile phone, then kicked a police officer in the chest while he was being put into the back of a van.

'Unbelievably dangerous'
Kevin Jones, defending, said Abi was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder after hearing that another family member from his come country of Syria had died.

He was sentenced to 12 months suspended for two years.

Judge Anthony Lowe said: "I'm afraid that it looks like you are someone who has a degree of arrogance and a propensity to act violently.

"Driving deliberately at a person is unbelievably dangerous. You took the risk for no reason whatsoever."

He disqualified Abi, of Chetton Green, Wolverhampton, from driving for 18 months and ordered him to complete £180 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay the victim he punched £250 and a further £589 to the woman whose phone he smashed.

Re: Sentencing

Youssef Abi? I suspect he is a member of The Protected Religion

That aside, sometimes I watch the Road Wars and similar programmes
At the end they let you know the outcome of the incidents, and I'm constantly amazed at the light sentences that are handed down

Re: Sentencing

It takes 18 months to come to sentencing, most sh1tholes would have forgotten what they have done by then, the message would be wasted on them anyway, they are unlikely to read a local rag, but, the follow up word of mouth could have a negative impact though.

Re: Sentencing

Thank you, Swimmy. I agree - that sentence is nothing short of ludicrous - not to mention a gross waste of court time.

Re: Sentencing

Yet another area where a 'top down' sort out is badly needed. More people in positions of power where they don't seem to realise what is happening in society, those who sentence seem to be out of touch with real life.

Negative actions have consequences, those consequences should match the level of the crime, the problem is that very often they don't. They are also of no example at all to others who may consider committing similar crimes.

As for some of the sentences? How on earth can someone be given a 'suspended sentence' learn from that. They first have to be caught committing another criminal act and the way police numbers are the chances that happening lessen by the day. Hardly punishment or any deterrent value whatsoever!

Hi

The other thing that seriously annoys me is his lawyer and the claim he had PTSD.

It is no secret that I have complex PTSD and am on a specialist course of treatment.

All of us on that course have seen horrific things over a number of years and none of us have any thoughts of randomly injuring people and hitting a female is an absolute No No.

Far too many are claiming mental illness to excuse their behaviour.

Re: Sentencing

It's about time prison sentences ran consecutively rather than concurrently as is the case at present in the UK and as for time off for good behaviour that should be time as sentenced or extra time added for being an a'hole!

Re: Sentencing

I doubt if the word fo the accused, through his lawyer, would be enough to convince the court that he had PTSD. I expect there were psychological reports as well. And here lies an example of why newspaper stories, little more than racist rabble-rousing, and the threads they inspire are so ridiculous and wrong. The documents the sentence is based upon do not go into the public domain so how can anyone know the reasoning behind his sentencing? It strikes me if what was reported is true, prison is the last thing he needs.
