Raised beds

Does anyone have any advice about managing raised beds. Is it absolutely necessary to have a liner? I was thinking this would make the crops "sweat". I'm trying to work out the point if you are putting raised beds right on the earth.

Also do you change the compost every year or just leave it and top it up?

Have a read through what the RHS advise about this Annie, see if it helps.
