What is the life expectancy of a SIM card

I have only ever had one SIM card and think I must have had it about 8 years.

How long do they last and what is the sign that they are failing.

Julie I think the problem is because mobile phones are relatively new we don't have a lot of past experience to go on .

My phone is very basic and quite new .It has become a bit temperamental, I can't use it to contact one person at all .

Yes mine is very basic but not so new, I think mine is about 6 years old now. Had to buy a new one when I parked the car on my handbag, the sim survived that one !!

You can get really cheap sim cards or even free ones might be worth trying one of those before blaming the phone or the sim if you are not sure which is the problem.

I can get one for free I think, I just wondered if anyone had a SIM fail or wear out and what are the 'symptoms' .

ST I still can't find anyone who can tell me what happens when one fails, does it expire slowly or all at once ...

AS there is no actual moving parts they should last many years providing they don't get damaged.
Changing it slightly that is why I swapped my hard drive to a SSD (solid state drive) as there is no moving parts and so much faster than the conventional disc spinning normal type. also it will never slow down by seeking the next free space as on a normal drive. Ok a bit more expensive but what an improvement.

Shut down computer time around 7 seconds and start up time under 20 sec

Meg, just a thought, have you looked at the SIM to see if it is bent or damaged in any way?
