Re: Petition by Age UK protesting withdrawal of free TV licences for over 75s

TVs are not essential to a person's life, so I think people should pay the licence fee if they wish to have one.

I think it may be more considerate to say TV is not essential to your life, rather than speak for everyone else.

I imagine those living alone, without a social life, or visitors, depend on the telly's rather a lot!

Hrmm. Not sure about that. There's an old girl a few doors down from where we live, mind a few doors in our case is close to half a mile, who is entirely housebound.

Although the memsahib does call in several days a week and drops off a few essentials such as a few cans of Guinness (!) and the occasional cooked chicken sorta things, she does love smoked salmon pieces, not the slices, the offcuts, and for her television is an essential.

Other folk drop in too but at night and in the early hours is almost always just her and her TV.

Now I'm absolutely certain that she's not unique but I do believe that a great many old and housebound people don't get the same bothering as she gets, and for these people having a TV really is an essential.

A couple of us installed a Humux Freesat box and an el-cheepo dish last Christmas. What a difference THAT has made!

Bloody well done mate, the tv for the disabled and housebound is essential in my view

Food, a place to live, clothes and warmth are essential to a person's life, definitely not a TV. The Government has better things on which to spend the tax payer's money than free TV licences.

Of course those things are essentials, no one's disputing that.
But one's mental wellbeing should be considered as well as their physical.

Let's just hope you never find yourself in the position of having to sit in a room, staring at the wallpaper each and every day. No one to talk to, no way of knowing what's going on in the world with no newspaper, and the only person you have seen for months is the district nurse who fly's in and out in 5 minutes.

But that will be fine will it, because you have warm clothes and food. If you are really lucky, the nurse might even remember to bring you a newspaper once a month!

Let's hope you are not going to have to "eat your words" in a few years time. TV is not essential to any of us right now as we are still out and about with friends and family around and with nimble fingers to use electronic devices but time is a cruel mistress...

And a persons mental life? You have family, god forbid that you never end up without them and become house bound
