Intel NUC

My latest computer that goes under the name of 'Intel NUC'. It has...

256 SSD.
i5 Processor.
16GB of memory.
Four USB 3.0 ports.
HDMI and mini-DP (display port) out.
Intel onboard graphics with 4K support.

The graphics capability copes with anything I've asked of it so far, including some quite graphically demanding games. It's practically silent and always feels cool. The HDMI-out plugs into my 24" monitor and input is via a USB wireless keyboard and mouse (1 dongle).

Good and bad reports can be read of the Intel NUC but I've taken my chances and so far, I'm pretty pleased with it. I hope this continues to be the case.

Re: Intel NUC

How good is the cooling?

Is the fan noisy?

Will have a look to see if I could just buy the box, with Mobo & Fan, etc.

Then I could put my own SSD, memory, stuff, in there.

Yes, just that d00d ..and a mouse. I've got a keyboard and mouse that run on the same dongle, so only one USB port taken up with them.

It does come as a bare-bones computer but I had mine made up by an Ebay seller who built it to the specifications shown. It cost £249. The fan is barely audible and the whole unit stays cool to the touch. It runs from early morning to late evening.

No it doesn't have a DVD Player. The files for installations I needed to do were put onto a USB stick using another computer's DVD drive. If having a DVD drive was essential with the NUC, it would have to be an external USB one. I'd say it might be necessary to run this via a powered USB hub in order to get a good stable 5 volts for it. The NUC itself runs off an external plug-top type power supply and this might not be enough to run anything too demanding via the NUC's USB ports.

I read it can be bought like that but the Ebay seller did mine.

Also, it came with Windows 10 Pro installed but it was un-activated. An activation key could have been obtained but I decided to format the OS out and install Windows 10 Home. The reason being that I had a retail copy of Windows 7 Home and could use the key for that to activate the Home version of Windows 10.

Re: Intel NUC

Odd that it doesn't have a built in DVD but probably better to use an external one anyway. Tbh, I very rarely use my DVD player on the laptop anyway.
