It is all to do with numbers. In the 80s Holden and Ford sold 84000 Commodores and Falcons out of a total annual market of 150000 new cars. Last year the biggest seller, the Toyota Hilux, sold 46000 out of total sales of 1.1 million new cars. (Those figures might not be exactly right but they are of the right order)
The market is far too diverse now with so many choices available. Mitsubishi stopped manufacturing here a few years back, Ford last year and now Holden.
