The UK had no unlimited acces to the common market during the EEC period. When the free trade (persons, goods and services) was introduced in Schengen, you didn't join the other Schengen-countries (i.e. you didn't want to pay the contribution), but opted for a so called cooperation with Schengen countries. You wanted, and got, the advantages of free trade but didn't want to pay for it.
The same with the introduction of the euro. The UK demanded an opt out. You still have the £.
You never were a full member, you just tagged along and profited from other nations.
In answer to your remarks about the UK.
Negotiations are indeed in progress, and too slow for Leavers. It would have helped during the past two years if the EU had come down off their pedestal and negotiated like adults instead of acting like the computer it says NO!.
The reason the UK didn't join the Schengen countries had absolutely nothing to do with avoiding payment. It was simply a case of having too many immigrants coming in via boat, train and coachload. Do you really think we would be stupid enough to be part of the Schengen agreement with the hundreds of thousands that would have happily and casually walked through our borders. Our own people were, and still are suffering from shortages of everything as it is, thanks to the EU. We were very clever to steer well clear of Schengen. Especially as those very same countries, once so keen to be part of it are now closing their own borders to others. It's been nothing but a mess.
As for the Euro? well, although I loathed him, I thank God for Gordon Brown, who kept refusing Tony Blair pleas to join the Euro. What a disaster that has been to countries such as Italy, Spain and poor Greece. The EU should hang it's head in shame because it has nothing to be proud of bringing those once rich and proud countries economies to their knees. I can guarantee they rue the day they joined the Euro.
Stuff the Euro, we will keep our Pound thanks.
As for your last sentence - that really made me laugh!
Yes. we have tagged along - as one of the major Cash Cows for the lavish lives the unelected suits live. Also for bringing living standards up to the present for all EU Eastern European countries, but again, at the expense of our own people doing without in every avenue in British society.
So, with respect, continue with the besmirching of the UK, by all means. But WE ARE LEAVING by hook or by crook,
I just wish they would hurry up so we can look back at the disaster called the EU like a bad taste in our mouths.
