It's official, Big Ben will chime on 31st January

The new Speaker Lindsay Hoyle has said '' The great bell in Parliament's Elizabeth Tower should be rung on Jan 31 if MPs "wish to do that", stating that the UK's formal departure from the EU on Jan 31 will be a "significant moment''

Bercow tried to block it but we will have our bell to mark our long awaited freedom from the EU

Re: It's official, Big Ben will chime on 31st January

I absolutely love to hear Big Ben on New Years Eve.
I find that moment quite emotional. Always felt the same.
I always sit up and wait for those chimes.
It is also my son's birthday N.Y.E. too.

This year, it will be even more significant with Brexit as well.

Ooh, hold on, I'm getting my Dec/Jan muddled up, aren't I.
I was thinking Brexit was end Dec.

Sorry Meg.

Good news. Bercow is gone and forgotten now. He has achieved nothing apart from delaying things and costing the country money.

So, will January 31st be our Independence Day, or will we have to wait for another year?

Beacons should be lit from the top of every hill too.

Yes Bread 11 and Midnight I guess

Since the bell fell silent in 2017 for restoration work, permission has been granted for it to sound on each Remembrance Sunday and New Years Eve so I assume it will still ring at midnight as well as 11pm.
