British Trade Minister Lizz Truss said in a statement that they "have reached consensus on the major elements of a deal".However, despite reassurances that the two countries had by and large reached an agreement, auto tariffs and agricultural products have proven to be a sticking point in the negotiations.

Japan had hoped to lift tariffs on auto and auto parts earlier than in the current trade deal between the EU and Japan, which will phase out import tariffs on Japanese vehicles by 2026.

Your making up stories again.

Tarrifs will be dropped on Japanese cars in 2026 which maintains the status quo with what the EU has with them. The framework deal will be signed up later this month - and in any case, the UK controls its tarrifs not the EU - we can adjust our MFN tarrifs whenever it suits us.

Hi

A lot of contradictory news at the moment.

The latest being that we are not reducing Import Tariffs on Japanese Cars until 2026.

Best just wait and see.

It's very simple really. Till the end of 2020 the UK is covered by the japan-EU deal. This deal provides for a phase out of tariffs on cars by 2026.

By 1 january 2021 the trade between japan and UK reverts to wto terms, with full tariffs both ways. The year 2026 is meaningless for the UK.

Tariffs for mfn can only applied it a fta is under negotiation.

Japan needs the UK as its base into the EU. No UK-EU deal, sayonara says japan.

Having promised to rush through a post-Brexit*trade deal, Japan and Britain made significant progress only to discover that the fate of Stilton has driven a wedge between them.

Japan is reportedly reluctant to offer Britain better terms than it gave the EU, which has a combined population nearly seven times the size of Britain’s, in a free trade deal that went into effect early last year.
Japanese business leaders have*voiced alarm*over the potential impact of a no-deal Brexit. Around 1,000 Japanese companies employing 180,000 people have a presence in the UK, according to the Japanese foreign ministry.

But there is speculation that Tokyo could consider lowering the barriers to blue-veined cheeses given the relatively small costs involved. https://www.theguardian.com/politics...it-trade-talks
