No doubt it has been explained on numerous occasions on the many threads that have been written about all of this, but to save me trying to find it, could someone explain my error of thinking that just because someone is entitled to apply for asylum does not mean that they will automatically be granted it?

So, if a boatload of seekers come ashore, then why can the UK not simply state that they will not be granted asylum and return them to either their country of origin, or the last country they were know to be living in?

Very true. It is not a given. They have to "prove" they will be murdered or persecuted or similar if they were to be returned to their native country.

If they land without papers or passport then we can't prove where the hell they come from originally making it almost impossible for us to send them back. In any case, the bleeding heart liberals, et al would all be fighting their case through the courts using legal aid (our tax £s) to pay the costs.

You're quite right. In case asylum is denied, and you cannot send them back for whatever reason, you have to put them in jail. You will find that instead of keeping them in jail, your government lets them slip into society where they have to make do for themselves. It's cheaper than housing feeding them in jails, but many of them end in criminal circuits, are caught, and locked up in jail, ultimately.
