Re: Pies

Linda was working in Melton Mowbray yesterday and brought back a `traditional` pork pie. It was good but my local butcher here in South Lincs makes better ones.

Being a Bedfordshire lad by birth I still like a `clanger`-a suet roly poly with meat at one end and jam at the other. Do not confuse with inferior types from other counties-the jam is at the wrong end.

Re: Pies

There are many different pie shops in this area but for me, Galloways beat all with their meat pies, and Muffin Man for the potato and meat. Not keen on pasties because they're usually made with flaky pastry, which I don't like.

I don't know if anyone has heard of Yates Greer - I think it's a local butchery who has no shops, but delivers meats to butchers, but their pork pies are to die for. Soft pastry, spicy pork filling and oodles of gravy. In fact, you have to drink them before you can eat them.

Re: Pies

I wouldn't think of buying a pie from a shop , it could have any old meat in it .
Better to make your own

My favourite is steak, mushroom and red wine pie made with skirt beef.
Like Mags I like Cornish pasty (also made with skirt beef) but I don't put turnip mine.

Re: Pies

Sorry folks, but I don't really care for pies, sweet or savoury I rarely eat them, so don't know of any good pie shops. - Why wrap a load of podge round your food?

Re: Pies

I do like to make my own, and I may just do that over the weekend. If I've enough time, I'll make meat and onion, a quiche and maybe even a chicken and mushroom.

Re: Pies

I don't like pork pies at all, I hate all that gooey jelly stuff between the meat and the pastry.

The true Cornish pasty is made with shortcrust pastry, Mollie ..... I don't like flaky (puff) pastry either.

Meg, I use swede instead of turnip in my pasties

Re: Pies

I hate pork pie with avengeance but recently went to Porters near Covent Garden who are a traditional english restaurant and specialise in their own home made pies. Really good if anyone here is up in the smoke and not expensive for London. Three of us ate with 2 bottles of wine for £80.
