Bone density test

I've broken two bones in just over a year. My wrist last May & my ankle this July.
I'm quite worried at the ease with which they broke.
Do you think it would be appropriate for me to ask my doctor to refer me for a bone density test?

I haven't been offered one!!

Re: Bone density test

No harm in asking Carol ... I've had one as I allegedly have a liver problem which was discovered when my Rheumatologist arranged for a liver function test ..... I do not have any symptoms that I know of but I now see a liver specialist once a year.

It was the liver specialist who sent me for a bone density scan and they found that I had a low reading of osteopenia of the spine so now I have to take calcium tablets.

Re: Bone density test

I would like one, too, Carol - how easy is it to get one, I wonder. Not broken any bones but things seem to be creaking more and I'm really curious as to the shape they're in.
You'll have to let us know if you manage it.

Here in Scotland Carol,if You're over 60 and have fallen and fractured a bone, the Hospital You've attended sends an Appointment for You to have a bone scan within a few weeks...A few years ago I slipped on black ice and broke My collar bone, had the scan a few weeks later and all was well..Maybe You'll still get an app' sent to You,..if not,ask Your GP to make one,Good Luck.

No harm in asking Carol.

Are you small boned and petite? as the risk factors for osteoporosis is higher in that group of women.

I am and I have early osteoporosis, my mother had it but hers was quite far advanced when diagnosed and she shrank quite rapidly, I asked for a bone density scan because of the family connection (and lower back ache) and it was discovered in my lower spine, I take a weekly tablet and calcium tablets every day and have a scan every two years, my bone density has improved and no more back ache either and I am 1/2 an inch taller now than I was when I was first measured before the scan.
