Re: Bone density test

I had a bone scan at age 50 as my mother had osteoporisis. The result showed severe osteoporisis in both the hip and spine and the technician told me it "all my fault"!!! My GP prescribed once a week Fosamax, which is a pretty agressive bisphosphonate and despite following the very strict instructions I suffered severe side effects, which still give me problems. Almost as an aside, my GP ordered a blood calcium test, which showed a very high level of calcium in the blood. An appointment with a specialist was rushed through........ for two days later at 7 am on a Saturday morning and I was told I had a tumour in the throat. After having very many tests, I eventually had my throat cut and parathyroid gland removed - that was in 2003. The osteoporisis remained, until earlier this year a bone scan shows an excellent degree of improvement.
If anyone has to take bisphosphonates I'd advise you do some research first.
I've also been told that ALL women over 50 - whatever their diet - should take additional calcium....with vitamin D and magnesium.

Do you think it would be appropriate for me to ask my doctor to refer me for a bone density test?

I haven't been offered one!!
Would not ask would demand one.
