The real prob is *we have no idea* when we are being given bad treatment. Even if you get a 2nd opinion, it's just your best guess as to which of them is giving you the right advice.

I have a difficult/obscure health prob which has taken 17 years of myriad specialists & alt. practitioners + help from online forums to get to the bottom of. Of all the medics I've seen in all that time dentists have been the very worse for BS'ing & bad treatment. The private ones are now more salesmen than dentist & the NHS ones are being pulled both ways and trying to supplement with private fees at the same time as trying to deal with the labyrinthine NHS bureaucracy..all of which means you can be misled and lied to - you really have to keep on top of these guys and try and educate yourself as much as poss on dentistry options and procedures.. half the time , with the NHS guys anyway , they don't even KNOW what's available and what you're entitled to.

Re: NHS Dentistry - some facts.

When I lived in Hampshire, NHS dentists were as rare as hens' teeth (excuse the pun) and here in Aberdeenshire, there's more chance of winning the lottery than finding one. There is little alternative to going privately, but for around £10 a month, I get 2 check-ups, 2 scale&polish and all X-rays.
Any necessary treatment is at a discounted rate.

For anyone who needs NHS treatment and is not registered with a dentist, they can ring an appointments hotline to see if any dentist has a free appointment.

Meg, the scheme is called 'Practice plan' and is supposed to be suited to people who are in 'maintenance mode' with little remedial work to done.

My dentist said that NHS fillings were usually amalgam, but privately, she would use what she considered the most suitable. Not sure if the NHS policy is different in Scotland to rest of UK.

I have a NHS dentist I go to for a yearly check up and a clean up as well.

Last time it cost me about £26.

But also on that visit I had baldly chipped a front tooth so had to have further treatment cost was £50.50 as this under the NHS was for two treatments.

Yes that was the same one George though it has been changed recently to another company I don't recall the name but the charges are about the same .
