£5000? Blimey. You sure you didn't mean £500?

No, it made a mess of everything, I was doing in excess of the speed limit down the Motorway at the time, about 30 quid short of 5 Grand was the bottom line, virtually bought the car twice.

Cambelts dont just need changing based solely on mileage but also age a manufacturer might stat a cam belt needs canging at say 120,000 miles or 5/10 years whichever is soonest

....and after reading this thread it had added one more item to my 'things to worry about' list

I tend to use the premium diesel when I can, I have been told that it has additives to help prevent this problem, but I still think we have been conned here.
I mentioned this business of additives to a friend of mine, a retired lorry mechanic, and he said they never used any in the 45 years he was working.

The additive lowers the temperature of the 'stuff' collected in the DPF allowing it to burn off without having to blast it down the motorway (apparently).

Diesel Particle Filters have only been fitted to new cars since 2009 so your 'friend' wouldn't have needed to add any additive. Older diesel users still needed to give the car a blast down the motorway at times though.

It is a right mess and affecting loads of cars. I have heard of brand new cars being taken to the garage within just a few 1000 miles. Older drivers with fancy cars being hit with massive bills owing to the fact they just trundle around all the time.
