A few photos from Namibia

For anyone interested, I'm posting a few photos from my wonderful Namibian trip. I started off in the Namib Desert in the south, where the light was constantly changing on the sea of dunes and there was sporadic wildlife passing:

There is a fascinating bird called the social weaver, and they build huge nests together, getting bigger with each generation:

Some passing wildlife:

And the stunning Dead Valley where ancient dead trees still stand amidst the dunes:

Sorted! I messed up the image posting at first.

(Why is it that if you manually copy and paste the image address it doesn't work, even though it appears to insert exactly the same as when you 'copy image address'???)

Then I moved on to Damaraland further north. Endless vistas of hills and plains, a unique culture and 'click' language and some fantastic singing! Not to mention a few elephants, mountain zebras, rhino, springbok and much more.

On arrival it looked rather like Arizona:

But the view from camp was quite different:

One of my favourite morning shots:

The neighbours were reasonably friendly though some were a bit shy:

Free roaming rhinos are having their horns removed to try to stop poaching:

The big excitement of the stay was that it RAINED on my last day there. I had arrived by driving up a dry river bed, but by the time I left that river was flowing for the first time in four years so I had to be flown over it:

It's not often that rain on holiday is a bonus, but it was a special experience!

If you're still reading…

Finally I moved north to the Kunene River, which forms the border between Namibia and Angola. It's an unusual mixture of arid desert and green riverbanks, with huge crocodiles and lots of interesting birds. Needless to say I was able to set foot on Angolan land visa free!

Morning light:

On an evening walk - the shadow on the rock is me looking across the river to Angola:

This was on a morning walk in the opposite direction:

On the same walk we saw a couple of bee eaters - sadly not a sharp image as handheld on zoom:

The nomadic Himba tribe have simple homes, but still have a broom!:

Footprints in the sand… :

Is it any wonder I want to go back?

This trip was pure holiday, Mags, although I am looking into an option for some volunteering work there.

Great pictures Ania, loved all the elephants especially.
The Dead Valley pictures gave me the creeps though, what an awful desolate place. Do you know the history of it?

Ania your pics are fab. Absolutely wonderful to look at. One of my favourites is the elephant pic. My favourite animal. Thank you so much for sharing them.
