Western North Carolina
My daughter and I decided to take a detour from business to spend a few days in the North Carolina mountains. Forming 400 billion years from metamorphic and volcanic action when Europe was colliding with the North American Plate, these mountains were once as tall as the Alps.From the air, these mountains take on the shape of bands of folds, much like the folds that would form if you pushed rolled out dough away from you.
Besides being a source of mining over the years, these mountains are scattered with small villages, vacation cottages, and a few ski resorts. It's a great place for endless hiking or just relaxing. Nary a Starbucks or Walmart in sight:

With adventure also comes hospitals, dead car batteries, lost and found sunglasses, missed turns, and things that go bump in the night
