What a stupid twit that man was!
Eileen darlin' - its because I is cockney Londoner where we always refer to ladies as darlin'.

OK ladies how do you feel about people you dont know calling you Darling/Sweetheart or other names of endearment?

Had to get used to the Cornish lingo though, they call the females 'my bird'
When I lived in Dorset and Somerset it was 'muy luver'
In Derbyshire it was 'me duck' I don't mind any of these terms of endearment being used when someone addresses me as long as it is not done so in the context of being patronising.

No Eileen darlin' - that's Jean who comes from the emerald Isle - I is pure cockney - born within the sound of Bow Bells.

Re: Ladies what is your view?

Depending on context and tone it can be patronising. I find it odd when someone younger calls me 'dear' or 'hon' but don't mind so much from someone closer my age.

As for the scenario in the shop I'd have lost patience and tried to politely excuse myself.

I meant Irish ancestry ... you have the gift of the gab .....

I'm mostly Irish: English and Irish on Dad's side, German and Irish on Mom's.
