Re: Petition for a more realistic pension

It's unaffordable. The Benefits system focuses additional payment where means testing justifies it.

Keep in mind that our state pensions have to be funded by the taxes being paid by younger workers.

Re: Petition for a more realistic pension

If you do not have a Works Pension, the State Pension is simply not enough to live decently

Many retired people have a modest house to support and this involves upkeep and costly repairs
There is no money for holidays and new clothes either.
One one should be enjoying the later years of life they have to skimp and eat Scrag end of Mutton instead of Fillet Steak like the overfed MP's do.
Also go to bed with their clothes to keep warm to save electricity. Shameful when the Government is happy to spend £billions on Foreign Aid, much of it wasted and going to the wrong people
Other Countries are far more generous to their Senior Citizens and treat them with the respect that they deserve.

No, it means that the shortfall between the state earnings related benefit is made up by means tested benefits.

IMO there should not be a state age related benefit at all.

Instead means tested benefits should provide for the needs, not the wants but the needs, of those unable to provide for themselves.

I appreciate that. However what about those employed people who opted out of paying into a works pension plan and decided not to?

Some chose other means of saving ,but many low paid workers had barely enough to live on even when employed.

Yes, that is all true ,but some need a lot more than others, often when they don't know how to manage their income, or chose to spend it on beer and cigarettes!

You are correct Todgy, it would be unaffordable now, because
the NI contributions are now payed into the general fiscus!
so nobody knows where the money is spent anymore?
Imo if they had left the system as it was, ( a seperate dedicated
fund) adjusted for inflation, then we would'nt have the problems
we have now??

Regards Donkeyman!
